HOW WE LIGHT UP BRNO IN A HEALTHY AND SAFE WAY

WE LIGHT ECONOMICALLY. BRNO IS ONE OF THE MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT CITIES IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC.

We use voltage regulators, reducing the energy consumption of public and festive lighting by up to 26%. The operating time of public lighting is 4,084 hours per year, and with a total annual consumption of approximately 14,399 MWh and an average power consumption of 81 W per 1 light point, the Statutory City of Brno ranks among the most energy-efficient cities in the Czech Republic.

WE LIGHT SO THAT IT IS NEVER DARK UNDER THE LAMP. FOR YOUR SAFETY.

It is necessary to illuminate the road, but not to dazzle. We provide lighting so that a night walk in a park evokes pleasant feelings, not fear. And we constantly make sure that no corner of Brno falls unintentionally into darkness. And we are successful! The average non-luminosity in the city is 0.45%, which is above the common standard. To give you an idea, in other comparable cities the average non-luminosity is between 3 and 4%.

THE LIGHTING INTENSITY IS CONTROLLED REMOTELY. USING A SELF-DEVELOPED SOLUTION.

A total of 469 commercial metering switchboards are installed in Brno to control public and festive lighting. 29 of them are controlled by time switches, 440 switchboards are remotely controlled by means of a radio-data network.

BRNO IN THE LIGHTS OF TENS OF THOUSANDS OF LAMPS. YET IT DOES NOT RADIATE.

The quality and operating condition of public lighting is prescribed by the technical norms and standards of the City of Brno. However, our goal is not just to meet the standards, but to try to find the ideal balance between healthy and safe lighting. We regularly measure luminosity, eliminate light smog and, where necessary, replace non-compliant public lighting sources with more environmentally friendly ones.

HISTORY OF PUBLIC LIGHTING IN BRNO

INTRODUCTION OF PUBLIC LIGHTING

Street lighting was introduced in Brno in 1781 at a ceremony to honour the Russian heir to the throne, Pavel Petrovich, and his wife Maria Fedorovna on their journey to Vienna.

TALLOW LAMPS WERE REPLACED BY OIL LAMPS

After the introduction of public lighting, there was 277 tallow lamps on Brno’s streets. The tallow lamps were replaced by oil lamps from 1841.

GAS LIGHTING COMPANY FOUNDED

Entering into the public lighting contract heralded a new era in the lighting of Brno’s streets and squares. Negotiations dragged on, however, and gas lighting began on 1 January 1849.

BRNO SUBURBS FULLY ILLUMINATED

From the beginning, public lighting was limited to the city. Later it was added gradually on the streets outside the city wall. All of Brno’s suburbs at that time only received gas lighting in 1860.

THE BEGINNING OF ELECTRIFICATION OF PUBLIC LIGHTING

The first six electric lights were erected in 1901 in the Great Square. In 1914, the city council decided to gradually introduce electric lighting in Brno’s districts.

FESTIVE LIGHTING IS A PART OF BRNO

It would be hard to imagine our city today without festive lighting. It has become an indispensable part of the city’s infrastructure and plays an important role in highlighting the city’s architectural landmarks and the pedestrian zone in Brno.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF PUBLIC LIGHTING

We operate 41,404 lighting points, of which 40,879 are public street lighting points and 525 are festive lighting points for cultural monuments and important buildings in Brno.

✓ We renew public lighting. In 2018 we replaced 35 km of cable lines, 696 corroded poles and 42 fuse boxes.

✓ As part of preventive maintenance, 7,005 poles were measured for static stability using the MASTAP method in 2020.

✓ Our technicians handle over 3,000 lighting faults each year.

✓ We are currently continuing in the replacement of poles and cables – reconstruction of the oldest parts of the city’s public lighting.

✓ We provide brightness and static measurement services for lighting poles to municipalities and service organisations that take care of public lighting.
